Noah S. Philip, MD

Noah S. Philip MD is a Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is the founding Section Chief of Psychiatric Neuromodulation at VA Providence, and is Lead for Mental Health Research at the VA RR&D Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology. Dr. Philip’s laboratory uses cutting edge technology to understand and treat posttraumatic stress disorder, major depression, suicidality, and other serious psychiatric diseases. He uses noninvasive brain stimulation and functional neuroimaging towards these goals, with methods that integrate electromagnetic stimulation  (e.g., repetitive TMS, theta burst TMS, transcranial direct current stimulation, etc.), functional connectivity, psychotherapy, and virtual reality. Dr. Philip's research has been featured in the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, and in the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative. Dr. Philip is supported by brain stimulation and neuroimaging grants through the Veterans Administration, National Institutes of Drug Abuse, Department of Defense, and through industry collaborations. He is active in the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology, Society for Biological Psychiatry, and the National Neuroscience Curriculum Initiative (tDCS+Virtual Reality for PTSD). In June 2021, he received a cooperative study award from NIMH to perform first-in-human studies investigatingMRI-guided low intensity focused ultrasound for depression and anxiety. He plays a significant mentoring role at Brown University where he is Associate Director of the NIMH R25-supported psychiatry resident research program.
